Why is my YouTube Traffic Source report missing recent data or showing incomplete traffic sources?

Context
When using the YouTube Analytics connector, you may notice that certain traffic sources (such as YouTube Advertising) appear to be missing from your Traffic Source report, or that the view counts do not match what is shown in the YouTube Analytics UI. This can be confusing when the YouTube interface shows data that is not yet reflected in your data extract.
Answer
This discrepancy is expected behavior caused by a reporting lag in the YouTube Analytics API. Unlike simple view counts, advanced breakdowns such as Traffic Sources rely on a global batch-processing backend to accurately categorize how viewers find your videos. This complex processing introduces a standard 1.5 to 3-day (36 to 72-hour) reporting lag.
There are two key reasons why Traffic Source data may appear incomplete for recent dates:
Automatic Query Cut-off: According to the YouTube Analytics API Documentation, the API only returns data up to the most recent day for which all requested metrics are fully processed: "The API response actually contains data up until the last day specified for which all metrics in the query are available at the time of the query." Because Traffic Source data takes longer to attribute than raw view counts, the API withholds results until processing is 100% complete for a given day.
Data Thresholding: Google applies data anonymization thresholds to Traffic Source data. If a particular traffic source has not accumulated sufficient volume on a specific day, it may be temporarily omitted for privacy reasons. The 3-day processing window ensures all delayed attribution has synced before the final numbers are served to your reports.
As a result, Traffic Source data that appears in the YouTube Analytics UI may not yet be available via the API and will typically become accurate and complete once the 1.5 to 3-day lag has passed. If you are seeing missing traffic sources for very recent dates, waiting until the data is at least 3 days old before re-fetching should resolve the discrepancy.
